For more than a century, Erie has been associated with locomotives and in recent years efforts to build locomotives that are more efficient and create less pollution.
Most of that history is focused around the former GE Transportation plant, which was purchased by Wabtec in 2019. The company introduced the new, more energy-efficient Evolution locomotive in 2005 and the first Tier 4 locomotive in 2016.
More recently, engineers and hourly union workers in Erie designed and built FLXdrive, a new battery-electric locomotive that couples with traditional diesel locomotives to form a hybrid train.
But Wabtec isn t the only Erie company with a track record in the locomotive industry. And it isn t even the only Erie company working on the cutting edge of low-emissions, new-energy locomotives.
