Assam Assembly Poll 2021: BJP gets 33 21% share of votes; Congress 29 67%

STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI: The BJP had the last laugh in the Assam Assembly poll by getting a 33.21 per cent share of votes against a 29.67 per cent share of Congress. While the BJP polled 63,84,538 votes by 93 candidates, Congress polled 57,03,341 votes by 95 candidates. BJP s ally AGP got a share of 7.91 per cent of votes. It polled 15,19,777 votes in all. The regional party contested 29 seats. Congress ally AIUDF got a share of 9.29 per cent of votes, the total votes being 17,86,551. The party contested 20 seats. Another Congress ally BPF got a share of 3.39 per cent of votes, the total votes being 6,51,073. It contested 12 seats.

STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI: The AJP (Assam Jatiya Parishad), Raijar Dal and the AGM (Anchalik Gana Morcha) have failed to cut the ice to make their presence felt as alternative regional forces in the State. The results of the Assembly poll have proved it. Among the three newly-floated regional parties, only the Raijar Dal has won a seat in the candidature of its president Akhil Gogoi. It has come to light that the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) agitation spearheaded by the AJP in the State had no impact on the voters of the State. The Raijar Dal and the AGM also lent their support to the agitation.

But certain acts and statements made by the leaders of these two parties which lacked political pragmatism and maturity are belying the hope and expectation generated in the minds of the people.
