protesters. but the fuse was burning long before that. lit, in fact, by decades of oppression and poverty. and on january 25th, the anger finally exploded. the pro-at theres call it the day of rage. a rage regime of president mubarak. u.s. officials watch and wait. our assessment is that the egyptian government is stable. within hours, it s clear that is not the case as the protests and violence intensify. the egyptian government moves to shut down the social media site that the young demonstrators are using to galvanize and organize the crowds. we urge the egyptian authorities not to prevent peaceful protests or block communications including on social media sites.
