the past weeks when that happens. we have. joining me in washington, kitty hill gins, former member of the nstb, and nick sabatini, former associate minister of the faa. welcome to you both. let me first take these developing stories we have now. when you see that the malaysian source coming from the malaysian government, malaysian officials, says well, it deliberately flew outside malaysian radar range. does that tell you anything as former investigators and safety experts, does that tell you anything about where this plane is or how or why it might have gone down? no. i think it is interesting information. it s one more set of data that will be looked at. they re looking at it now. as they are looking at the pinger noises. but until we find the black boxes, until we find the wreckage, we don t really have any hard information to go on.

can you envision a scenario whereby a plane through anything other than someone in the cockpit would fly a route that totally avoids indonesian radar? is that human induced? it could be human induced or it could be a third agent getting in the cockpit and directing the pilots to fly outside that area. when you transit the ocean obviously, you re going to get out of radar range, but on this flight path that was up on the monitor, it looked like they were parallel on the malaysian coast just outside of the radar range. and so, yes, that could be that could be done intentionally. right. but is there a scenario in which it is not done intentionally? a plane can t fly that can t fly that sort of regularly, can it, or on a route unless it s being guided by something.

where this plane could have gone down and not have been spotted. how many of those areas exist? those exist in many places when you are under oceanic procedures. once you are outside of land or outside of radar range, you are not in any sort of physical contact if you disable the airplane system. swavlling around t traveling the globe you won t have data much like if you were driving in your car cell phone would drop out and come back in. those are little spots around the globe and they do experience that. when you are traveling outside of land outside of radar range if you disable some of the communications in the airplane then you are flying in blind if you will and to other controllers in other aircrafts aren t able to see you.

continuing to slow down. here s the radar now out of new orleans. and there is the center. and here is the worst weather. so where you see the oranges on the radar, that s the worst weather. there s also very bad weather behind it, but it is out of radar range. i m going to look at a radar simulation. this is a future radar. it s an rpm computer simulation we run here at the weather channel. watch the oranges and reds. there we are on this afternoon. here it comes slowly. here we are this evening at 6:00, 7:00 eastern, here we are with midnight. according to the simulation, the center is still down here. a very gusty band of wind over the city there. not quite to mississippi yet. and the bad weather remains offshore. that s at midnight tonight. now, overnight you can see it creeping ever-so-much closer. by the early morning hours, now the bad weather is coming in to the southern new orleans suburbs. the center is just on the shore to the southwest of the city.

where the radar scan then failed as far as limitation was concerned. the airplane flew out of its radar range. military radar sounds fancy and sounds comprehensive but it s actually not. you got no data back. could be any craft moving through that space. correct. all it does is get a skin paint, a primary target. it says something is out there. we don t know what it is and it s not identified like the civilian radar interrogating the transponder. this is the track it s moving on and we ll have to do something to identify it. greg, when you see the sequence of shutdowns in this plane of reporting instruments, does that read as an inside job to you? would that have had to be a pilot or someone with that knowledge? based on my years of experience and working on silk air over in indonesia, when you start to see these things where you have multiple redundant systems and they start to fail, sequentially, you have to wonder, what s the commonalty? if it was a total electrical failure,
