Local Afrofutures: Communities and Connection This event brings together local activists and thinkers whose work intersects in various ways with the humanities to talk about the multi-faceted activist and creative work being undertaken in southeast Michigan. Panelists include Yodit Mesfin Johnson, president and CEO, NEW Ann Arbor; Rod Wallace, educational programs coordinator, Grove Studios, Ypsilanti; and Liz Kennedy, program manager, Allied Media Conference. Humanities Afrofutures—Poetry as Praxis: Alexis Pauline Gumbs in conversation with Madhumita Lahiri Alexis Pauline Gumbs is an American writer, independent scholar, poet, activist, educator, and “queer Black troublemaker and Black feminist love evangelist” based in Durham, North Carolina. She holds a PhD in English, African and African American Studies, and Women and Gender Studies from Duke University and is the author of Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals; Dub: Finding Ceremony; M Archive: After the End of the World, and Spill: Scenes of Black Feminist Fugitivity. Join us as she talks about the many aspects of her work in conversation with Madhumita Lahiri, U-M associate professor of English language and literature.
