Racine School Board appoints two new members

Commentary by Brian O'Connell -- RUSD: Putting students first in a pandemic, and always

BRIAN O CONNELL The Journal Times recently published a commentary by Libby Sobic of the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty about education. I am grateful for the opportunity to respond on behalf of the Racine Unified School District Board of Education. First and foremost, we want to celebrate the work of all our employees over the past 14 months. Since the day schools closed last March, our staff members have put students first. Whether standing outside in the rain and snow distributing meals, or driving to homes to bring hotspots and homework, to learning how to teach virtually and then learning how to teach remote and in-person students simultaneously, our educators and support staff have gone above and beyond. Nothing has been easy or perfect but our team has demonstrated grit, determination and love for our students and families.

Racine Unified School District to begin offering in-person classes in March Updated: 8:56 p.m. on Jan. 25, 2021 RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) At the Racine Unified School District Board meeting on Monday, Jan. 25, the district laid out its plan to begin offering families in-person classroom opportunities starting in March. RUSD has not had in-person classes since spring of 2020. The district faced mounting pressure from parents to move ahead with in-person classes while the teachers’ union voiced concerns about the spread of coronavirus and advocated for continued virtual learning. The district presented a slideshow at Monday’s board meeting ahead of scheduled public testimony. RUSD is set to offer families in the district three options: in-person, remote and virtual.
