it also should be home-like. people are going to be there and whether you re there for three weeks or for three years, the more home-like it is, the more functional you will become. i d like a show of hands how many of you have an overhead public address system in your homes. [laughter] with the technology we have today you don t have to do that and so we ve got to try to think about what s not home-like in these environments and what can we change that s pretty easy to change? when we talk to residents, west to them. we say to them, what do you value. it s the close relationship with the nurses aid and form these close relationships and these bonds. it also recognizes the fact that quality is based on the staff and so it is giving the resources and the staff to do the job and the authority and the autonomy and authority to do that. it s incredibly hard work but quality is dependent upon the empowerment of those people. it is also collaborative decision-making. a nursing
