A patch of tallgrass prairie is coming to North Campus. Since the beginning of spring, a group of students supported by the Center for Prairie Studies has planned to replace the sod on a patch of Mac Field, the triangle where the sidewalks meet outside of Harris Center, with 6,200 prairie plants.
“The fact that it’s surrounded on all sides by sidewalk makes it easier to maintain and prevent invasive species from getting up inside the prairie,” said Tommy Hexter `21, who helped lead the project.

As the weather warms up and the sun shines over Mac Field, Grinnell College students in a typical spring semester enjoy a wide range of exciting events and campus traditions every weekend. This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions that discourage large group gatherings, students are getting creative to figure out which events can and cannot be salvaged.
With students across the globe, those in the Midwest are hopeful to spot a broad range of bird species despite the weather being uncooperative. Many of the students have had to fight the
“Although cold weather has been the biggest challenge … I have had the most success when I go out to the local nature sanctuary,” Sevier said. “Just because that is just enough to not be effected by the suburban infrastructure. I typically see more birds than what I would see around my house.”
