CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – Eight former members of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Memorials, and Public Spaces are calling on City Council to immediately cover the downtown Confederate statues while the decision is made what to do with them. Furthermore, former chair Don Gathers and former commissioner John Edwin Mason are calling on Council to make sure the statues are never again on public display after they are removed from the present locations. City Council is considering a Monday night resolution of setting a public hearing 30 days after newspaper publication, and calling on the Board of Architectural Review “to consider City Council’s stated intent to remove, relocate, contextualize or cover the Statues prior to the public hearing date specified in the published newspaper notice”.
