The third annual Southwest Colorado Women in Business 2021 Award Ceremony, hosted by Ballantine Communications, the Durango Herald and the Cortez Journal will be held in person this year. The event recognizes nine outstanding women across several different categories that work and live in both Montezuma and La Plata counties. The ceremony, which almost didn t happen this year, is usually held in March to honor Women s History Month. Cindy Fisher is the coordinator for the event. She says that the honorees are chosen based on community wide nominations, and then furthered by a selection committee.

The committee looks for women who not only are a big part of their business and or industry, but also a big part of their community with volunteer work and other things like that, that merely make them stand out in that particular category or any one of the categories and in the community that they work in.

Forum participants answered questions focused on a range of issues, including public and private housing, homelesssness, transit, land use and development, small businesses, the city’s Open Streets program, concern over federal aid, and more.
