Days after many people – including this newsroom – called for Malta to start publishing its daily COVID-19 vaccination numbers, the island’s health authorities did so. However, a problematic reality could soon be unfurling with this latest statistic… and it’s either an innocent oversight or a dangerous move towards government-sanctioned spin. During her weekly press conference last Friday, Public Health Superintendent Charmaine Gauci promised that Malta would start publishing its daily vaccination numbers. On Monday, that pledge materialised in a new, redesigned version of Saħħa’s daily updates. And while details on at least some of the newest infections disappearing, the page had added information on the daily deaths and the total number of vaccinations up to the previous day.

Gozo gets its first COVID-19 vaccine

Gozo received its first COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday. First to be inoculated was Felicienne Cini, a senior staff nurse at Gozo General Hospital s Intensive Therapy Unit. This was announced in a tweet by Health Minister Chris Fearne.  The first shipment of the vaccine arrived in Malta on Saturday and Mater Dei nurse Rachel Grech received the first jab on Sunday. Another shipment of the vaccine was due to arrive in Malta on Monday, but was delayed due to a logistical issue .

These are the leading stories in local newspapers on Monday. Both Times of Malta and The Malta Independent lead with a report about the launch of the COVID-19 vaccination programme in Malta. The  Times of Malta also refers to comments by Rachel Grech, a staff nurse at the Infectious Diseases Unit at Mater Dei Hospital who also became the first Maltese person to get vaccinated. She is urging people to get vaccinated.  The Malta Independent meanwhile reports that l-Istrina - the annual charity marathon in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation, raised €6.5 million on Saturday. L-Orizzont publishes an interview with a pharmacist who says that while it will take some time for life to get back to normal, the new vaccine offers a ray of hope.
