I m perched at the brink of a sheer vertical cliff on tiny island off the coast of Alaska from where I sit and look out over the great blue perpetually unsettled sprawl of the North Pacific Ocean and it s quite unsettled today you can hear the surf crashing and surging driving against the rocks a couple of 100 feet below where I m sitting just across from me is another cliff the island has been cleaved out and there s a sharp we re being riven between one rock face and another and then that facing rock wall cliff about 200 feet higher so the lower part fairly leading out over the sea of the upper part of it has a broad rock face that angles slightly back off the vertical and that rock face is asked with hundreds of tiny ledges there just a few inches wide most of them look like they re maybe less than a foot or so long and perched on almost every one of those rock
