A dozen Nelson Mandela Bay metro officials who were placed on suspension, some since June 2021, continue to enjoy their full salaries at ratepayers’ expense while the city drags its feet in concluding their cases.
The Amathole district municipality paid hundreds of millions of rand for questionable tenders, with more than R230m between 2017 and this year paid to service providers whose contracts have been red-flagged by the ailing council’s new leadership. The struggling municipality has recently battled to pay staff salaries.
