HASSAN/MYSURU: In the wake of chief minister BS Yediyurappa’s directive to conduct an audit of mining activities across the state, the district administration in Hassan has decided to verify the licences of all 101 quarries in the district.
Of the 101 stone quarries across the district, Arsikere, Hassan and Holenarsipur taluks are home to 10 or more sites. The district is also home to 36 granite-processing factories, 23 sand quarries and 82 crushing units.
Senior geologist in the department of mining and geology Nagaraju said only 60 to 70 quarries are currently active. “In many cases, three or four quarries are owned by one person. Only two owners in Hassan possess a licence to use explosives. The others are coming to an agreement with these two and blasting explosives nevertheless. We have issued notice to those supplying the explosives and owners of quarries have been alerted about the problem,” Nagaraju said.
