Pauline Ely
HAMPTON Pauline Ely, 82, went to the great running road race in the sky on March 3, 2021. She was born Oct. 25, 1938, in Hampton to Neil George Bailey and Ruth Thompson Bailey, the third of four children. Pauline was preceded in death by her sister, Jean; and brother, Walter.
Pauline was and is “Always a Crabber,” having graduated from Hampton High School, Class of 1958, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Locals will remember her as the face behind the counter at Hampton Hobby House, which she owned along with her husband, Marty Leiss. Although they divorced, they continued to be friends and business partners until Marty’s death in November 1995. The store closed in 2000.
Jess Peck Miller II
HAMPTON Dr. Jess Peck Miller II, 88, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2021, among family at his home. He was born in North Carolina in 1932, and was raised with his three brothers in Staunton, Virginia, and Wilmington, Delaware.
He graduated from the College of William & Mary and earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia, where he lived on the Range. He finished his medical training at University Hospital in Cleveland, where he met and married a beautiful and warm-hearted nurse named Patricia Namy. After two years of Navy service as the medical officer on a submarine, he and Pat moved the family to Hampton in 1964 where they have lived ever since. Together they raised seven children.
Wayne L. Tysinger
HAMPTON Wayne Lee Tysinger, 73, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, at Riverside Regional Medical Center from SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 pneumonia).
Born in Newport News, he grew up in the Hidenwood area and graduated from Ferguson High School in 1966. Wayne furthered his education at Southwood Junior College and the University of Richmond. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1969 to 1975.
Wayne worked with his father at CAT’s Auto Supply until 1996 and worked for Pomoco Auto Group and Hibbard’s Iron Works. In 2001, he went to work with the Hampton Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sheriff, retiring in 2013. He was awarded Deputy of the Year in 2009 for esteemed duty in the Hampton General District Courts.
Justin Lee Smith
HAMPTON Justin Lee Smith, 37, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2021. He had been working in Hamshire, Texas, hoping to bring his family there shortly.
Justin was born Oct. 29, 1983, in Newport News to Teresa Philip Smith and Randy Smith. Justin graduated from Surry County High School in 2002.
After graduating, he followed his dad into the farrier business, where he met Heather, the love of his life. Together, they worked with equines up and down the East Coast. He also worked on crabbing and oyster boats in downtown Hampton, teaching his oldest son the importance of working with your hands.
When he wasn’t working, Justin liked fishing with his sons and friends. He also enjoyed cooking, grilling and days at the beach with his family.
Teresa Ann ‘Terry’ Dugger
HAMPTON Teresa Ann “Terry” Dugger, 57, was a very special person. She went to be with our Lord Monday, Dec. 21, 2020. Terry was born April 15, 1963, at Fort Belvoir.
She lived in several places in Virginia, where she attended special education classes. Finally, she lived in Hampton, and worked at The Arc of the Virginia Peninsula for several years.
Terry loved living where she had a pasture with cows and horses in her backyard and planes flying overhead. She enjoyed her magazines, movies, animals and really loved the Christmas season with all the decorations.
We will miss her happy disposition and her quick mind.
