Vijay Wadettiwar, the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra assembly, has suggested the creation of a separate quota for the Maratha community, rather than sharing the existing reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). He stated that he is not opposed to increasing the overall quota ceiling to accommodate the Maratha community. Wadettiwar criticized the state government for being selective in taking action against police officers involved in a lathi-charge incident during protests for Maratha quota. He also suggested that the Union government could create a separate quota for Marathas similar to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category.
