Ashdown Student Named Arkansas Governor s Distinguished Scholar

Ashdown Student Named Arkansas Governor’s Distinguished Scholar Ashdown High School Senior Robin Roy was named an Arkansas Governor’s Distinguished Scholar for Little River County this year. In order to even be considered for the honor, a minimum composite score of 32 in the ACT must be made AND either a 3.50 academic grade point average or selection as a National Achievement Finalist or National Merit Finalist. “This is a scholarship program to promote academic excellence and to encourage the state’s most talented graduates to enroll in Arkansas post-secondary educational institutions is created and established which shall be cited as the Arkansas Governor’s Scholars Program.”

10 students qualify for  national physics competition,

Ten Alachua County Public Schools students qualified this year for the United States of America Physics Olympiad (USAPhO) out of just 13 public and private high school students statewide. Eight students attend Buchholz High School, which had the third-highest number of qualifiers in the nation this year, and two Eastside High School students also qualified. To qualify for the USAPhO, the students were among top scorers in the nation on a challenging exam called the F=ma, a 75-minute test with 25 questions focused on algebra-based mechanics. In the country, 333 of the highest-scoring students are now eligible to take another grueling exam covering a variety of physics-related topics, including mechanics, thermodynamics, relativity and nuclear physics.

Kiski Area trivia buff to compete in national quiz tournament

A lifelong love of trivia is paying off for Eddie Fuhrer of Allegheny Township. The Kiski Area High School senior began watching “Jeopardy!” when he was 5. “I’ve always been a trivia person,” he said. Fuhrer joined the Quiz Bowl Team three years ago and is team captain. Now, on Sunday, he’ll represent Kiski Area High School in the Individual Player National Tournament, sponsored by the National Academic Quiz Tournaments. The National Academic Quiz Tournaments were founded in 1996. Fuhrer is the first student from the district to qualify at the national level. He will compete against 111 high school students from 23 states and the District of Columbia.
