A freight train fatally struck a person Saturday night in Gaithersburg, near an overpass, CSX officials said.
The train hit the person around 10:19 p.m. Saturday just west of the rail overpass over Quince Orchard Road, CSX wrote in a statement to Bethesda Beat on Monday.
Montgomery County Fire & Rescue officials responded and determined the person had died from their injuries.
CSX did not release the name of the victim.
Montgomery County police posted on Twitter over the weekend that the Chestnut Street railroad crossing was closed due to an investigation. They did not provide additional details.
A police spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment Monday afternoon. No other details were available about the circumstances of the person’s death.

The CEO of Novavax said Thursday that up to 800 people could be working in the company’s new global headquarters on Quince Orchard Road by the end of the year.
CEO Stanley Erck talked about the business during a question-and-answer session with reporters on Thursday following a visit by Gov. Larry Hogan to the site.
