State health and environmental officials are urging people to avoid swimming and other activities that could bring them into contact with certain waterways in the wake of Tropical Storm Elsa.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the Department of Public Health advise against water recreation and swimming in the Quinnipiac River, near urban areas and in or around Norwich, Bridgeport, Hartford, Norwalk, Wallingford and the greater New Haven areas for 48 hours after the storm. These are areas that experienced discharges of untreated sewage during the storm and pose a health hazard, the departments said in a news release.
