people don t necessarily air details of wrongdoing, wis chis a big problem for us. matthew rosenberg from the new york times is just on. i thought he brought up a really good point where he said, just let him talk. this isn t a time for lawmakers to be grandstanding, because you don t have a lot of time. just let him talk, because you may get more out of that. do you agree with that strategy? i do. this is about the american people tomorrow. yeah, i think the american people want to evaluate his credibility. they have heard a lot of different details coming from him. but at the same time, hech was convicted of lying before congress. so i think people want to know, okay, is he telling the truth? you know, what does he know about the president? what does he know about the president s conducts and what kind of wrongdoing happened in 2016 or even now? so listen, behind closed doors, i think you have a little bit more leeway with questioning him, right? is there where you re goi
yes. just let him talk. because you may get more out of that. do you agree with that strategy? i really do. this is about the american people tomorrow. yeah, i think the american people want to evaluate his credibility. they ve heard a lot of different details coming from him. but at the same time, he was convicted of lying before congress. so i think people want to know, okay, is he telling the truth? you know, what does he know about the president? what does he know about the president s conducts and what kind of wrongdoing happened in 2016 or even now? okay. so, listen, behind closed doors, i think you have a little bit more leeway with questioning him, right? is there where you re going to ask about russia or about the moscow tower project? correct, correct. yeah, so, there are two reasons why it s closed door. one, because there s an ongoing investigation and we don t want his testimony to shape, influence, or taint anyone else s testimony. and then, two, he may shar
months ago saying having paul manafort pleading guilty and cooperate was such a big move by the special counsel. and yesterday, jaw-dropping when you think about that. they have spent months, deciding to cooperate with him, interviewing him, questioning him, fbi agents questioning him. u.s. attorneys questioned him. and what they re eye saying is, he repeatedly in the course of the past few months, lied to them about information that they were questioning him on. certainly, this means they have a lot of information that they do not need paul manafort for. they had obtained on their known through intelligence and perhaps other sources. so when they went to question paul manafort it appears according to court filings that he lied to them. what s really interesting in all of this, this is probably not something that just happened. that they had spent months with
whitaker impact the investigation here? well, whitaker has the authority to ask mueller to provide an explanation and justification for investigative steps he takes. and then, in certain circumstances, if he thinks that mueller is straying too far afield, going outside the bounds of justice department guidelines, he could overrule mueller. so you could imagine if whitaker really had in his mind that he wanted to impede mueller, he could start asking him to justify everything he does. because prosecutors exercise judgment and discretion, and they often make a whole bunch of investigative steps in rapid fire. so you could imagine whitaker slowing down mueller, questioning him, overruling him at times. he would be required to report any of that to congress. any times in which he overrules mueller, but you can imagine him slowing him down quite a bit, and he also could fire mueller if he believes that mueller has
