are trained overseas and whether they are home grown because they happen to be american citizens or not, they get training and they get support, financial and material and they do things here. i think just as certain democrats were wrong when they said that george w. bush purpose in his effort against terrorism was to trample the constitution, i also thing it is wrong to say that barack obama is not serious about the war on terrorism. i do think there is a cautionary tale in this for the administration which is it is not a good idea to trumpet the successes too much because there is an element of luck and hard work and good intelligence and police work but at some point one of these guys is going figure out how to set off his bomb. liz, did the obama administration handle this case and talking about primarily after the fact, after they arrested him, better than they handled the case of the christmas day bomber and what difference does it make that shahzad is a u.s. citizen? i think

in times square has produced a flood of questions about how to prevent more terrorist attacks on this country. joining us is john brennan, the pez s top counter terrorism advisor. welcome back to fox news sunday. thank you, chris. start with the alleged times square bomber. has reportedly told authorities that he was trained by pakistani taliban commanders. on the other hand, general david petraeus says shahzad was a lone wolf who did not have direct contact with terrorists. what is your best understanding of this. first of all, wish a happy mother s day to all those mothers out there. many who are serving in defense of this country. mr. shahzad who attempted to carry out the attack in times square looks as though he was operating on behalf of the ttp, the taliban within pakistan. a group that is closely allied with al-qaeda. it had a murderous agenda
it was handled by the obama administration? well, the big picture is what john brennan said this morning. the pakistani taliban recruited shahzad and sent him back here to kill americans. the notion this is a home grown attack, a loa lone wolf, a onef is worry some. the obama administration having gone through the attempt to make shahzad and abdulmutallab an isolated extremist and then be embarrassed within a few days. once again, that is still interesting. maybe mr. brennan s mints represent a change and maybe we will be serious about the international attack on us, the war on terror we are fighting to use a term that the administration doesn t like very much as opposed to pretenting that random guys are popping up here and there and trying to set off bombs. chris: mara? the administration is not suggesting or pretending that these are random guys. they are involved in a serious effort to stop terrorists who
similar to al-qaeda. they plan together and plot together. almost indishable. this is something that we are looking at in terms of the investigation and understanding exactly who mr. shahzad worked with and the extent of his training as well as his interaction with the individuals whether here in the united states. chris: do we believe that he was trained and funded by the pakistani taliban? we believe that he was. did he meet with the top like mashed and their. he had extensive interaction with the ttp and this is something that we are looking at carefully, understanding the extent of the interaction and the extent of the direction and guidance that was given to him. chris: do we believe this was a response to the u.s. drone attacks in pakistan? the ttp has been working with al-qaeda for a number of years. they have targeted u.s. interests and pakistani
