Quesnel Mayor expresses frustration with the courts SHARE ON: -Photo: City of Quensel Mayor Bob Simpson says Quesnel City Council and taxpayers have done their part to address crime by adding both RCMP officers and bylaw officers to combat crime, but he says their efforts are being stymied. “Our RCMP officers, sometimes in partnership with our bylaw, actually catch offenders and sometimes catch them in the act only to find out that the crown isn’t going to prosecute, or if they do prosecute, the individuals are let back into our community fairly quickly.   It’s very frustrating for Council to see our tax dollars go into what we can do to increase public safety in our community, only to see the ball dropped when it gets into the court system.”

SHARE ON: -Photo: MyCaribooNow Quesnel City Council has directed staff to come back with a formal report on a full repair of the Johnston Bridge. Council was presented with four options at a special meeting on Tuesday night. Option A involved comprehensive repairs to the bridge for a 15-20 year lifespan. It would bring the bridge up to a full legal axle load rating for 63,500 kilograms, although Director of Capital Works and Infrastructure Chris Cobin noted that the lifespan would increase if Council were to keep the 10,000 kilogram weight restriction that has been in place since October of 2018 after an inspection by engineers revealed that it had corrosion problems.

Tanya Turner is the Director of Development Services… “The funding needed is 25 thousand for a three month trial for an overdose monitor device that can detect health symptoms of an overdose within a private residence at Bridges Supportive Housing.” The money will come out of the dollars set aside for vulnerable populations within the COVID-19 Restart grant that the city received from the province.

Quesnel Council to pay more for road repairs as winter takes its toll on City roads SHARE ON: Flamingo Street (Photo provided by the City) Quesnel City Council will dip into its Capital Reinvestment Fund to pay for some unexpected repairs to four local roads. Matt Thomas is the Director of Public Works. “Abbott Drive, Flamingo/Perry Street, Wilkinson Avenue, Tingley Drive and Twan Avenue.   After the winter season the above mentioned roads have broken down to a point where driver safety is a concern. Although these roads have been discussed for future repairs it became apparent that these repairs could not wait.”
