A sailor assigned to a Virginia-based Navy amphibious ship died of complications tied to the illness caused by the coronavirus, the service announced Friday night.
The sailor, whose name was not released pending family notification, was assigned to the amphibious assault Wasp out of Norfolk. They died on Friday, according to the Expeditionary Strike Group 2. We offer our condolences and join the Sailor s family, friends and shipmates in mourning the loss of this Sailor, officials with the strike group said in a statement. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

The 26-year-old Washington native was assigned to the blue crew of the Georgia-based ballistic missile submarine Tennessee and is one of two active-duty sailors to die this week after contracting the novel coronavirus. Myers had been placed in quarantine on Jan. 18 as a precaution after close contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID-19, Naval Submarine Forces said Friday in a statement.
