TALLAHASSEE, Fla â Michelle Chason and others are worried 2021 is shaping up to be a repeat of 2020 when it comes to getting unemployment benefits.
âIf we have to go through, and I donât think we do, a whole re-applying thing, I mean thatâs gonna be a nightmare for everybody,â Chason said.
Last May, she reached out to ABC Action News for help moving her claim along. She, like so many others, were stuck navigating CONNECT for weeks before being able to apply for federal funds under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program.

Five days into 2021, âItâs worse than itâs ever been. Itâs worse than itâs ever been,â said Vanessa Brito, a community activist who has helped people across the state sort through issues when it comes to their claim.
She says a large number of people have contacted her worried theyâre now ineligible for benefits.

Jan.1 marks a new calendar quarter for Florida unemployment, which during the pandemic has brought various glitches and confusion.
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity requires many claimants to login and reaffirm their eligibility for federal benefits through a quarter change questionnaire.
“Like we saw in October, likely PEUC and PUA claimants will likely have to complete the questionnaire,” said unemployment expert Vanessa Brito.
The questionnaire typically pops up when claimants try to request benefits.
