T. S. Banks is directing a collection of spoken word pieces and monologues in the Loud N Unchained Black Theater Festival.
Several years in the making, this celebration of theater, music, poetry and performance art written, directed and performed by Black artists was originally on the schedule last summer at Broom Street Theater. The LNU Festival instead will make its debut virtually with five filmed performances premiering free of charge at blacktheaterfestival.com (7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Saturday). The fest includes works by Austin Dean Ashford, Sean Avery, Quanda Johnson and Rachel Lynett, as well as a showcase of spoken word and drag performances by Madison and Milwaukee performers. Note, each performance will only be available at the time it premieres.

The LNU (Loud âN Unchained) Black Theater Festival, which debuts on April 30, has been several years in the making. Producer Dana Pellebon says it feels long overdue.
âI was actually the last member added to the team,â Pellebon says in a recent interview. âBut this idea aligned really well with my goals as a director, producer and artist. Iâve been working for a while to create a space to showcase Black theater artists.â

UW-Madison doctoral student Justin Kroll is a cast member of the University Opera production What s Past is Prologue: The Unfinished American Conversation.
University Opera returns with a spring production mixing filmed and staged elements.
Whatâs Past is Prologue examines history while considering current events. Texts by or about U.S. figures â Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain and Walt Whitman â are set to songs or song cycles by composers Christopher Berg, Margaret Bonds, Tom Cipullo, Michael Daugherty, Scott Gendel, Jennifer Higdon, John Kander, Steven Mark Kohn, Ned Rorem and Gwyneth Walker. Accompanying panel discussions examine how the legacy of hierarchical structures in the arts is changing, and the intersection of cancel culture and Susan B. Anthony s views on race
