now suggestioning pardons for january 6th rioters is certainly extreme even for trump tch. i don t want to overstate this the idea that there s some daylight between republicans and the former president. what s your assessment right now? we ve seen some polling that trump numbers have ticked down among republicans. do you think he still has a firm grip on the party? donald trump still has his grip, but it definitely is quaking and quivering in places where there are plenty of republican voters who voted for trump, but they might be be categorized as softer trump, so to speak. and they would be okay with another republican stepping up and filling the mantle. you ve got the hard cores, the maga, the conspiracy wing that certainly is going to follow donald trump every step of the way. but there are plenty of other republicans who could go for someone else, if the choice presented. but the big if is, will donald
strong worded statement that s sure to get vladimir putin quaking. anna, let s talk about the latest round of subpoenas from the january 6th committee. they re clearly keeping a spotlight on this alternate elector plot. these have moved beyond the bold face names. these are targets in the states. these aren t the d.c. characters. what standed out how, and do we have any sense what the committee is up to next? absolutely. i agree with you. two things stand out, one, kind of this wider web that you start to see the january 6 committee move on from, it s not just donald trump trying to figure out how the tentacles operate within washington via the states. and certainly, the people that actually infiltrated the capitol but these are going into elected officials into states and party committees. so, i think you ll see this larger, broader narrative hopefully come out in the
quaking in his boots. instead, this is what s happening, and it is beginning to be a low-level, lengthy, disruptive period, what can the u.s. do to get putin to knock it off? you want to do two things. one, you want to strengthen ukraine. economic help. cyber defense. make ukraine a less vulnerable target for putin. as the president hinted at yesterday, think about offensive cyber. you want to basically say, if you re going to play this game, two can do it. just say you did some things going after russia s energy industry. by the way, richard, explain. we always talk about what russia does to us or what they tried to do to us. can you explain just how much damage, because we never talk about it. how much damage the united states of america could do to another country if we did get engaged in cyber warfare. oh, we could do enormous damage. we ve been self-deterred because we re worried about a world where it can be vulnerable. i guess what i m saying is, militarily, people don
i think that they support president trump on this out loud when privately they say it s ridiculous. we should be nervous about our democracy. i don t think everything that kamala harris said is correct but i think that is correct. mercedes, what say you, are republicans quivering and quaking as jim points out? no, i think republicans are feeling bold as we go into 2022 because of the failed policies by the biden administration. and kamala harris trying to salvage her reputation. i ve talked to friends who are democrats and they ve told me that she is really failed as a vice president. she has been unable to complete her task of gaining control of this border which i think is very reflective of all of what
mercedes schlapp and also a former trump white house advisor for strategic communications and have also jim kessler, the former legislative and policy director for senator chuck schumer and co-founder of the third way. jim, the v.p. here doubling down on something that the biden team has been saying all along, which is that, you know, threats to voting rights and climate are the preeminent concerns of the day. no news there. well, look, let s just start with what she said about democracy and i agree with her. this has been a very bad year for democracies around the world. it began in this country an january 6th with a smash and grab that the u.s. capitol that was threatening our democracy and it continued with former president donald trump spreading the big lie and then having a lot of republican office holders who privately say this is ridiculous but publicly they are quaking.
