ONE after another, major fires are exploding across Nigeria. Therefore, there is an urgent need to direct exceptional efforts towards reducing the quantum of deaths and losses arising from perennial fire outbreaks across the country.
From residential to public buildings, fire continues its destructive nature across states unabated. This trend should not be allowed to go on, especially considering the fact that many of the incidents are avoidable. The majority, as experts have noted, can be checked by ensuring quality electric wiring and fusing buildings with necessary fire safety gadgets with training of preventive measures.

National Liquid Hydrocarbon Production report of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has shown that Nigeria’s crude and condensate output in December fell nine per cent month-on-month to 1.52 million b/d, owing to production challenges at key export grade Qua Iboe.
According to the report, crude production fell to 1.17 million b/d last month from 1.33 million b/d in November. Condensate production, however, was up slightly, averaging 348,078 b/d in December from 339,920 the previous month.
ExxonMobil declares force majeure on Qua Iboe terminal

Force majeure is a clause that is included in contracts to remove liability for natural and unavoidable catastrophes that interrupt the expected course of events and prevent participants from fulfilling obligations.
A spokesman of ExxonMobil, who confirmed this to Reuters on Tuesday, did not say how much production would be lost, or when the terminal would come be back online.
However, at the time of the incident, ExxonMobil said it did not anticipate any impact to operations at Qua Iboe, which is one of Nigeria’s oil export streams.

An employee of ExxonMobil has been killed and another injured in a gas flaring accident, which occurred at the processing unit of the Qua Iboe Terminal in the Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Sunday when the victims, both supervisors at the QIB processing unit, decided to light up the gas flare, which exploded.
A source told our correspondent on Wednesday that the victims, who were to turn on the plant that was shut for maintenance purposes, allegedly flouted all safety procedures.
