The National Oil Spill Detection & Response Agency (NOSDRA) has confirmed the detection of crude spills from the ExxonMobil facility on the shorelines of Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a NOSDRA official in the Uyo, Akwa Ibom State office, disclosed this to newsmen who were on a fact-finding mission on Friday.
He acknowledged that the Zonal Head of NOSDRA in Uyo was not available to speak to the media on the matter, but agreed that NOSDRA visited the scene of the oil spills in November, which confirmed that there was an oil spillage at Atia and the other oil communities in Ibeno.

An employee of ExxonMobil has been killed and another injured in a gas flaring accident, which occurred at the processing unit of the Qua Iboe Terminal in the Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Sunday when the victims, both supervisors at the QIB processing unit, decided to light up the gas flare, which exploded.
A source told our correspondent on Wednesday that the victims, who were to turn on the plant that was shut for maintenance purposes, allegedly flouted all safety procedures.

A supervisor in ExxonMobil Producing Nigeria, operator of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC/MPN Joint Venture, has died in a gas flaring accident which occurred on Tuesday at the processing unit of the Qua Iboe Terminal In Ibeno local government area of Akwa Ibom State.
One other according to reports was seriously injured and is currently receiving medical attention.
The company’s Government Relations Adviser, Public and governmental Affairs, Mr Ozemoya Okordion, who confirmed the incident said the company was saddened and has reported to relevant authorities for investigations adding that the company is providing support to the families.
