But management at the home said the process went as smoothly as could be, despite a last-minute change of plan that led staff to draw names from a hat.

Bev Desautels, administrator of Qu’Appelle House in Regina, said she requested enough doses to vaccinate all 75 residents and staff at the facility on Tuesday. But public health alerted her that morning they wouldn’t be vaccinating 15 assisted-living residents. The vaccine was only for those in long-term care, a higher level of care.
REGINA The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) will review a scenario that saw vaccine recipients determined by a random draw at a Regina care facility. During Tuesday’s live COVID-19 update, Scott Livingstone, CEO of the SHA, addressed the issue, originally brought forward by the Saskatchewan NDP on Tuesday morning. Livingstone explained that Regina’s Qu’Appelle House happened to have some extra doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The plan was to vaccinate long-term residents, but staff made the choice to give the extra vaccinations to its assisted living residents, who weren’t slated to get the vaccine just yet.

An incident at Qu Appelle House in Regina has the Saskatchewan NDP accusing the provincial government of badly planning the vaccine rollout, while the Saskatchewan Health Authority says health workers were thinking quickly on their feet to avoid wasting any doses.
