Qantas, Australia's biggest airline, will pay a $66-million penalty to settle a legal dispute over selling tickets on flights cancelled weeks earlier. Labelled the 'ghost flights' case, Qantas customers who purchased tickets for flights cancelled two or more days in advance would be eligible for compensation.
Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce will bring forward his retirement by two months to help the company accelerate its renewal, according to the airline in a statement. As a result, CEO designate Vanessa Hudson will assume the role of managing director and group CEO effective 6 September 2023.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will look to seek at least a $250 million payout from Qantas if their federal court action against the national carrier is successful.
