NEXTDC launches first of its kind carbon neutrality program 18 Mar 2021 Australian data centre provider NEXTDC has launched a carbon neutrality program, the likes of which have been called the first of its kind in the local market. The NEXTNeutral data centre program encourages organisations to advance their own sustainability priorities, and to work with NEXTDC with the aim of using carbon offsets to ‘decarbonise the digital economy’. NEXTDC currently operates as a 100% carbon neutral company under the Australian Government’s Climate Active Program, while the NEXTNeutral solution has also been certified as a Climate Active colocation solution. The company states that it is moving forward with its commitment to sustainability by encouraging its entire ecosystem to operate at zero net carbon emissions within the NEXTDC data centre space.

Fujitsu will also offset direct emissions from fuel consumed by its Australian and New Zealand corporate fleet of nearly 200 cars. Dubbed NEXTneutral, the service involves the purchase of carbon offsets under NEXTDC’s partnership with Qantas Future Planet, a sustainability initiative spearheaded by Qantas and Tasman Environmental Markets. The carbon offsets will be used to fund ecological projects, such as restoring wetlands and rainforests impacted by commercial development, protecting pristine habitats such as the Great Barrier Reef, and supporting indigenous culture and traditional sustainable land management practices such as cool fire burning. 

NextDC launches first carbon neutral colocation solution in Aus

Australian data centre solutions provider NextDC has launched NextNeutral, the first carbon neutral colocation solution available in the local market, according to a statement. The solution aims to reduce the carbon footprint of data centres, which account for 3 percent of global energy consumption, through investment in carbon offsetting.  Thanks to this, NextDC is accredited as 100 percent carbon neutral under the Australian Federal Government’s Climate Active program. NextNeutral offers the chance for colocation customers to also offset their carbon emissions. Carbon offsets purchased through NextNeutral fund ecological projects, including the restoration of wetlands and rainforests, the protection of Australian habitats such as the Great Barrier Reef, and supporting Indigenous culture and traditional sustainable land management practices such as cool fire burning.
