A tornado tore through the southern U.S. city of Tupelo on Sunday, blowing the roofs off homes and tearing down trees and power lines, but there were no immediate reports of injuries. Emergency crews are currently assessing the degree of damage, the mayor s office said in a statement on Facebook, urging people to stay in their homes.
Social media images and videos showed the roofs of many homes and buildings blown away, electricity lines down and streets in the Mississippi city swamped with debris.
The tornado also wreaked damage in southeast Pontotoc County and Calhoun City, television station WTVA said.

The U.S. Energy Department said on Tuesday it is offering up to $8.25 billion in loans for companies to boost the power grid as part of the Biden administration s goal to set the country on a path to 100% clean energy by 2035.
The department is making financing available for projects that improve resilience and expand transmission capacity across the grid, so we can reliably move clean energy from places where it s produced to places where it s needed most, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said.

Germany will expand the energy capacity tendered in renewable power project auctions to help decarbonise electricity, and will relieve the burden on consumers by reducing a fee charged to support wind and solar operators, the government said on Thursday.
The coalition government, made up of Chancellor Angela Merkel s conservatives and Social Democrats, agreed on both measures to help achieve a 65% share of renewable sources within the power mix by 2030, versus just under 50% in 2020.

China has flagged it will seek to raise its power generation from solar and wind plants to around 11% of the country s total power consumption in 2021, from 9.7% in 2020, said the National Energy Administration (NEA) in a draft rule on Monday.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced that China will boost the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 25% by 2030, part of his pledge to bring the country s carbon emissions to a peak before 2030.
