terrorists. we untrust them overseas in battle we should protect them here where incidents like this occurs. there were there r three incidents in fort hood in five years. it stirred up a lot of emotion with major nadal hassan. why hasn t anything been done since then? that issed problem. there s a lot of talk coming out of washington. i heard measures but they haven t done much about this. here s the other issue. open fire with a smith and wesson semiautomatic pistol. it was just purchased recently. how did it slip through security? that is kind of puzzling. any time i am on a military base i would never i knew how secure these bases were. there is a lack of security. it started when they decided to take u.s. marines away from the gates. that s not to say these fellas
theories the most puzzling, they are often held by people who are not crazy at all. that s right. often the people who want to do us harm and have violence on their mind, they aren t actually crazy in any political sense. there are networks of people who have terrible views of the united states that are based not on reality but how information is spreading in the networks and that is a serious challenge in the coming decades. certainly in the most recent case is the airplane mystery, people are fascinated by mysteries but those involved, those directly involved, the families, are sort of inundated with conspiracy theories and generating their own partly because fueled by all of the confusion, the misleading leads. we had another one today where the search zone was moved. if i were a family member, you
somewhere out there. whether it s land or sea. that is the emergency locater transmitter in the tail. correct. that is the epirb, on the rafts. and then, of course we like to call them the old fashioned name, black boxes, cockpit voice recorder. give me a breakdown on those other two transmitters and battery life left on the black boxes. well, the elt and the epirbs are short-term, 24 to 48 hours. once they touch water they start sending a signal for only 24 to 48 hours. so what was in the tail and what was on those life rafts is done. correct. however, if that had happened, if they did get water in them, there s 16 satellites constantly monitoring that frequency. so that s what brings in some puzzling and they re getting nothing. they got nothing. water is one trigger. les, i thought the other trigger was actually impact. so we know one thing. this plane is not flying 12 days
so that sort of lends itself to 1, 2 people wanted to bring the plane down and sort of did so. this is not traditional terrorism. if this is terrorism, there hasn t been a lot of chatter since then. so it s sort of puzzling. and there is unfortunately, only so much we know. michael, thank you. we ll keep you standing by. want to bring in our panel now. joining me on set former ty board member. and an airline pilot and a former fbi special agent federal air marshal and served as a navy s.e.a.l. les you re on the panel friday night saying you think it s mechanical failure. once again, the point michael raises if everything stopped working at once, how do you explain the u-turn? the satellite pings they re saying was this jet.
