The Puyallup Tribe of Indians challenged an Electron hydroelectric project on Washington’s Puyallup River on Wednesday in the Western District of Washington. The plaintiff claimed in the complaint that Electron Hydro, Thom A. Fischer (a director of the project), and Tollhouse Energy Company have unlawfully taken various fish which are “threatened with extinction” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
The Puyallup Tribe purported that the defendants are breaching the ESA by continuing to maintain, operate, and renovate their Electron hydroelectric project on the river. The tribe’s reservation in Tacoma, Washington includes a portion of the Puyallup River which is downstream from the Electron facility. The tribe claimed that its fishing rights, which are protected under the Medicine Creek Treaty and the Puyallup Tribe of Indians Settlement Act, are “essential to the Tribe and its members’ existence and culture,” but are be

Itâs time to get rid of the Electron Hydroelectric Dam on the Puyallup River that has been killing salmon, steelhead, bull trout and other fish for more than a century. It is so old that it escapes most regulatory oversight and would never be allowed to be built today.Â
A last straw came in July when the damâs owners, Electron Hydro, placed nearly 2,500 yards of old, degraded and unapproved artificial turf in the river to cushion the liner of a new diversion channel. The channel was part of a renovation project to remove the current dam and replace it with an inflatable rubber barrier.Â

SEATTLE U.S. Rep. Kim Schrier, D-Sammamish, has added her voice to the chorus calling for removal of the Electron Hydroelectric Project on the Puyallup River, saying the dam’s cost to salmon is not worth it.
The dam, owned by Electron Hyrdo LLC, a division of Tollhouse Energy LLC of Bellingham, is more than 100 years old. It provides no irrigation, flood control or energy benefits and is a known killer of protected fish, including spring chinook salmon and bull trout.
