The State of Aloha | News, Sports, Jobs

808stateofaloha@gmail.com There’s an old picture of Kaanapali Beach that continues to amaze me. The black and white picture depicts a lonely, wide strip of golden sand sloping down into the clear waters between Maui and Molokai. Sparse clusters of swaying coconut trees are the only thing on the beach with Pu’u Keka’a, where Native Hawaiians believed spirits of the dead leapt into the afterlife. The amazing part is what you don’t see. No one is in the photo. It’s completely devoid of people, pavement and resorts. The first hotel built at Black Rock was the Sheraton Maui Hotel in 1963. Others followed. Over the decades Kaanapali became a bustling place for vacationers to snorkel, shop and get a sunburn.

California man bitten by shark | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 23, 2021 A 73-year-old California man suffered lacerations to his calf Friday morning after an apparent shark bite at Airport Beach in Kaanapali, officials said. The man, who was snorkeling around 40 yards offshore fronting the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort, swam back to shore on his own and was given first aid by the Westin staff, the Maui Fire Department reported. The man suffered minor lacerations in the encounter at about 7:20 a.m., according to a news release from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. It said no other snorkelers or swimmers were nearby. Shark warning signs were posted from Puu Kekaa to Honokowai Beach Park following the incident, which was reported around 7:45 a.m.
