Cyclone Yaas has left a trail of destruction in Odisha’s Balasore and Bhadrak districts where the severe cyclonic storm made landfall on Wednesday morning and continued to wreak havoc for a few hours. Trees, branches, thatched roofs were seen flying as the wind swept at 150 kmph.
Special relief commissioner said that the landfall process started at 9am near Dhamra.
Though the intensity of the storm was less than predicted earlier, heavy rain accompanied by strong wind damaged houses and uprooted trees in many parts of Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
Bhubaneswar and Puri were largely spared by the cyclone with no significant impact on life and property.
NDRF and Odisha police personnel continued restoration works even before the storm was over by cutting fallen branches of trees to ensure road connectivity.
NDRF and police personnel rescued 10 people when their boat capsized in Erasama area last night.
