Equity indices ended a volatile session with steep losses on Wednesday, led by weakness in banks and auto shares. The Nifty hit a record high of 15,800.45 in early afternoon trade. However, a sharp round of profit selling in afternoon trade dragged the benchmarks lower. All the sectoral indices on the NSE ended in the red. Negative global stocks triggered profit selling in domestic shares.
The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, slipped 333.93 points or 0.64% at 51,941.64. The Nifty 50 index lost 104.75 points or 0.67% at 15,635.35.
Reliance Industries (down 1.8%), Larsen & Toubro (down 1.8%), ICICI Bank (down 1%), Bajaj Finserv (down 1.46%) and Bajaj Finance (down 1.43%) were major drags.

Ion Exchange (India) fell 1.44% to Rs 1,383 after Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and his firm Rare Investments on Tuesday sold an aggregate 5.38 lakh shares, or 3.6% stake, in the company via bulk deals on the BSE.According to bulk deal data on BSE, market veteran Rakesh Jhunjhunwala sold 1.50 lakh equity shares (1.03% equity) of the company at Rs 1,205.19 per share yesterday, 2 March 2021.
Rare Enterprise, owned by Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and his wife, Rekha Jhunjhunwala, sold 3.87 lakh equity shares (2.64% equity) of Ion Exchange (India) at Rs 1,205.42 per share.
Meanwhile, Plutus Wealth Management bought 4.75 lakh equity shares (3.24% equity) of Ion Exchange (India) at Rs 1,220.75 per share.
As on 31 December 2020, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala held 5.28% in the Ion Exchange (India).

Shipping Corporation of India Ltd surged 15.67% to Rs 119.95 at 11:48 IST. The stock was the biggest gainer in the BSE s A group. On the BSE, 16.46 lakh shares were traded on the counter so far as against the average daily volumes of 3.83 lakh shares in the past one month.
Prakash Industries Ltd soared 13.91% to Rs 60.6. The stock was the second biggest gainer in A group. On the BSE, 4.91 lakh shares were traded on the counter so far as against the average daily volumes of 1.05 lakh shares in the past one month.
