The mishap occurred near Mahipani area of Bisra in Sundargarh district.
“Around 30 staff of our department were crossing the railway track along with the elephants when the speeding train, which was running at around 100 km speed, hit the two jumbos. Though our staff tried to stop the train by giving signal, it didn’t stop,” said Tankadhar Behera, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Rourkela Division.
The forest department will investigate as to why the train did not stop even after being given signal, the ACF added.

Two elephants were run over by a speeding goods train in Odisha’s Sundargarh district in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident took place close to Mahipani near Bisra in the district when a goods train hit two elephants that were separated from their herd.
This is the third train accident leading to the death of elephants in Odisha in the past three months.
The Odisha Forest department blamed the Indian Railways for the mishap. According sources in the Forest Department, the Railway Division was warned about the presence of a 15-member elephant herd in the Mahipani area two days ago.

An adult tusker was killed after being run over by an express train between Hatibari and Maneswar railway stations of Sambalpur division of the East Coast Railway (ECoR) on early Monday.
According to reports, Puri-Surat Express, which had departed from Puri at 7.45 pm on Sunday, hit the tusker at Bhabanipali village between Hatibari and Maneswar Railway stations under Sambalpur division at around 2 am.

Passengers travelling in the Puri-Surat Express train had a narrow escape after the train derailed after hitting an elephant between Hatibari and Maneswar railway stations of Sambalpur division. The Puri-Surat Express train derailed 2:04 am on Monday after hitting the elephant, the East Coast Railway said.
