ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) on Tuesday rescued another seven-month-old black bear cub.
Even though the cub, named Baloo, is in good health, two of its incisors are broken. On Tuesday, the IWMB vet removed a metal ring from the cub’s nose and checked its health. Since the Islamabad Zoo was closed, the cub was being kept in a secret location, IWMB chairperson Rina Saeed Khan told Dawn.
The cub was rescued from Gujranwala after the IWMB came across a viral video of it performing in the streets. Punjab Wildlife department was asked to assist in rescuing Baloo, named after the grey bear in the animated film, Jungle Book.

Punjab Archaeology Department, with the help of the wildlife protection authorties, has decided to build a mini zoo in the area of Hiran Minar.
Hiran Minar is a monument of Mughal era in Sheikhupura, near Lahore. It has been decided that different types of deer will be released to make the site a more attractive tourist spot.
The Hiran Minar is deemed as an everlasting symbol of human-deer friendship around the world.
Sheikhupura to Get a Mini Zoo Near Hiran Minar
The Punjab Archaeology Department has decided to construct a mini zoo at Hiran Minar, Sheikhupura, with the help of concerned wildlife protection authorities.
Viewed as an iconic representation of the Mughal era, the government has decided to release a variety of different deer in the area to give it a more attractive look.

Discussing the new development with reporters, the Punjab Archaeology Director, Malik Maqsood, explained that given the historic linkage between Hiran Minar and the Mughal royalty’s love for deer, the government has “decided to release deer in this area. In this regard, an agreement has been made with the wildlife protection department, which will set up a mini zoo here”.

The Punjab law which allows people to keep wild animals as pets has been challenged in the Lahore High Court.
Petitioners Sanita Gulzar Ahmed, the daughter of Chief
Justice Gulzar Ahmed, and Syed Muhammad Ghazenfur have said that Section 12 of
the Punjab Wildlife (Protection, Preservation, Conservation And Management)
Act, 1974 has âunconstitutional, illegal, detrimental, noxious, hazardous and
devastating effectsâ.
The petitioners said that the court should declare that this act ultra vires the Constitution and infringes the fundamental rights of wild animals. They asked the court to suspend the law and prohibit the wildlife department from issuing licences.
