According to BBMB records, the Pong dam reached its maximum capacity on August 15 and was nearly 10 feet above the danger level due to heavy rainfall in its catchment area in Himachal Pradesh.
“There still remains water accumulation of approximately 5 feet in the fields. It may take up to one to 10 weeks for the water to recede and the fields to dry up,” said former sarpanch Kishan Pal Singh Bittu from Sanyal village in Mukerian.
Police said that two separate FIRs were registered against four persons from Jalandhar who were found catching fish and bathing in the waters of swollen Sutlej despite warning that no one should go near the banks.
