Gala dinner serves up $40,000 for annual appeal
A charity dinner featuring culinary delights from some of the city’s top chefs has raised almost $41,000 for the annual Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal.
Kicking-off the fundraising for this year’s appeal, the second annual 5-Star Chefs for Charity gala dinner was held at Shangri-La The Marina Cairns on Saturday evening (24 July).
Themed “A White Christmas in July”, the event was attended by 160 guests, who were treated to four-course dinner, prepared by the head chefs from Hilton Cairns, Pullman Cairns International, Shangri-La The Marina Cairns and the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino.

Some of the city’s top chefs will combine their gastronomic talents to serve up a delectable menu at this year’s 5-Star Chefs for Charity gala dinner.
Initiated last year as the signature fundraiser for the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal, the inaugural event raised over $26,000 to provide food hampers for people needing a little extra help over the festive season.
Organisers are hopeful of toppling that achievement at this year’s dinner, which will be hosted by the Shangri-La on 24 July.

Accor, the largest hotel operator in Australia, has opened its first hotel in Victoria s picturesque Yarra Valley today with the opening of Peppers Marysville.
Opening in 2015 and developed in collaboration with the Victorian Government following the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, the property features 101 modern guestrooms, including five suites, a conference centre with five meeting and conferencing spaces catering for up to 350 guests, a restaurant and bar, gymnasium, tennis court, heated outdoor swimming pool, sauna, wellness centre and day spa.
The hotel has joined the Accor portfolio following the sale to new owners The Shakespeare Property Group.
