Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellows Honored in SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards. On Tuesday, March 22, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) announced the winners of the 2021 Mark of Excellence Awards, recognizing the best of student journalism.  Pamela De La Cruz, a 2021 Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellow and a student at the University of Pennsylvania, was named a winner in the Feature Writing category (Large Division) for her coverage on migrants fleeing their home country. Region 1 comprises Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Central and Eastern Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. “I felt shocked and speechless. It doesn’t feel real to me,” said De La Cruz. Miriam Gladstone, a 2020 Reporting Fellow, is a medical student at McGill University. Reporting on Gender with an Intersectional Lens . What does it mean to report on gender-related topics with an awareness of race, class, and other intersections? How can people of all genders and backgrounds investigate matters that pertain to both their identities as well as identities other than their own? Where would you find ideas for focusing on gender-related topics, and how can you pitch those stories to a range of media outlets? Tasneem Raja, an alumna of the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, will moderate a virtual conversation on Friday, March 4, with journalists Natalie Alcoba, Lawrence Andrea, Ashley Okwuosa, and Kate Sosin to dig into these issues.  The conversation is co-organized by the Pulitzer Center and the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, along with Women in Media.
