As we continue to work through the pandemic, Pueblo West Parks and Recreation programs look a little different now to ensure the safety of our community and participants.
In collaboration with other Parks and Recreation agencies around the area and closely following our local health guidelines, we have been able to creatively come up with safety guidelines and rules to continue to offer our adult and youth sports and leisure programs to the Pueblo West Community.
The pandemic has changed how we schedule our programs, reflect on what programs we can safely offer, research on what new safety rules we will need to enforce, and execute plans for intensified sanitizing procedures needed in order to offer our programs.
A holiday miracle came a bit early this year for 63 Pueblo West families struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic as they received much-needed food and toy-laden baskets Saturday.
The Pueblo West Parks and Recreation Department carried out its annual Christmas elf program providing the baskets with a lot of help “from many generous organizations and residents from our community,” said Carol Cosby, director for the parks and recreation department.
The department hosted the giveaway in a drive-through style so that families could stop and get their items safely.
“The annual food and toy drive has been going on for 23-plus years and it is something we look forward to every year,” Cosby said. “It is a lot of work, but the reward in the end is seeing the families’ faces it just melts our hearts. “
Students at Swallows Charter Academy are working to help the less fortunate of Pueblo West with a new toy and pajama drive.
The high school’s student council and National Honor Society members will be at the school, 101 Civic Center Drive, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday to collect drop-off items. Donations also will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday at Colorado Cabinet Works, 206 S. McCulloch, Suite C, and can be left in the box marked “Donations.”
Collected items will be donated to the Pueblo West Parks and Recreation Department for distribution in the holiday baskets going to families in need.
