The crisis of rental, public, and emergency housing facing Taranaki

In December 2020, there were 526 families in Taranaki on the waiting list for public housing, the Ministry of Social Development’s (MSD) Public Housing Register. Five years ago the numbers were relatively small. In December 2015, there were just 33 families on the register in the New Plymouth District. As of December 2020, there were 386. A staggering 1070 per cent increase. Both South Taranaki and Stratford have seen similar increases. Many on MSD’s Register are currently housed in emergency accommodation – most commonly motels. They are seeing families who have never been homeless struggling to find somewhere to live.
