Founders and us, the relevance of our origins. I am gay gaines, and im an addict of founding American History. In november of 20 15i was having breakfast with jo ellis and speaker Newt Gingrich at mount vernon, my very favorite place in america. We were lamenting the fact that most colleges and universities in the United States are no longer teaching founding American History. And, in fact, most high schools are no longer teaching our founding American History. In 1898, when seniors and colleges and high schools were asked who is the greatest hero, they unanimously said george washington. In 1988, when they were asked the same question, the answer was michael jordan. We were discussing my dream of building a future for the past right here in palm beach, florida. In what some might think an unlikely location, but i told them about this incredible organization, the society for the four arts and its generous benefactors and members, and both historians were thousandtic. And it is confirmed that almost anybody was some relationship, say through marriage, can have the name of a famous person to their own name. Rather nice. Lafayette never knew his father. His father was killed in battle against the british at age two. And he was raised by his very plain, but wise grandmother. T chavaniac his own mother was much happier living in the palace in paris. Which, of course, after the kings moved out, it was turned over for nobility to live there, and as you probably know, now is course, the and of park is still there. It is a pretty place to visit and get the french flavor. Which i certainly enjoy. And, he was treated like a prince. As a young lad. What thenew very early story of his family was. That, he came from the blood of nights, course through his blood system. He was an early challenger. Unfortunately, his mother remained in paris, pretty much, and the boys stayed with his grandmother. Eventual
I also want to tell you right away that this is the first time that i have spoken on lafayette. I thought youd be interested in knowing that you are going to be at the Maiden Voyage of this trip. If you really want to know, you can consult the book. It is 446 pages. It is illustrated. And my wife says it moves along really rapidly. [laughter] mr. Miller the story of lafayette is quite profound. He was born to wealth. In central france. In a area called auvergne, and he grew in his early years in a chateau there called chavaniac.
