Mother and Baby Homes: Kildare official warned of turning unmarried mothers into social outcasts more than 80 years ago

Mother and Baby Homes: Kildare official warned of turning unmarried mothers into social outcasts more than 80 years ago Reporter:   ); A senior Kildare health official sounded a warning about how unmarried mothers were being treated over 80 years ago. The information is contained in the 3,000 page report of the Commission on Mother and Baby Homes published last week. In a paper presented to Muintir na Tíre Rural Week in 1939, the assistant county medical officer of health for Kildare, who was a woman, argued that it is “highly desirable that unmarried mothers, some of whom are often of weak mentality, should not become the outcasts of society and add further to the difficulties of the situation.”

Concern as lockdown sees rise in school drop-outs

For some this will simply mean retiring to their bedrooms, logging on to their school s system via a laptop or tablet, and using high-speed broadband to keep up with the latest communications from teachers and classmates. Yet for others this closure, this lockdown, threatens their very future in second-level education and may even see them abandon their studies altogether. Marie Louise Byrne is a Community Development Coordinator with Wexford Local Development (WLD) and is also a mother of four sons, one of whom did his Leaving Cert last year. She has witnessed the impact of lockdown from both sides of the coin, in both a professional and personal sense.
