By failing to enforce the problem building bylaws, the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality has allowed Central and several of its historic buildings to deteriorate into disrepair.
Eyethu was a prime entertainment venue in the 1970s and 80s when black people were restricted from white cinemas in the Joburg CBD, where the only cinemas were at the time. It now, however, stands empty and derelict with little to no activity inside it.
The Gauteng government said that the demolition of the Eyethu Cinema in Soweto has not been approved. This comes after reports that it would be replaced by a shopping mall emerged.
