17 die as Covid positivity rate reaches 24 4pc in Peshawar - Newspaper

PESHAWAR: As many as 17 more people, including a doctor, died of coronavirus in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday as the positivity ratio for Covid-19 in Peshawar reached 24.4 per cent, the highest in the country. Dr Saddam Dilawar Khan died of Covid at the Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, taking the total number of medics falling to the virus to 50 in the province, according to the Provincial Doctors Association. The province also recorded 984 new cases, said a report released by the health department. The development came after the health department formally asked the hospital, the largest government one in the provincial capital, to immediately halt elective services and refer non-Covid patients to Khyber Teaching Hospital for management. The LRH was also told to increase the number of beds in intensive care and high dependency units and procure the medical equipment required to deal with the influx of coronavirus patients.

Talking to The Express Tribune Dr Abdul Wadud Khan, Dr Mudasar Afridi and Dr Attiqur Rehman said that the government has decided to allocate a separate building at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) to Covid-19 patients which means that other patients will be suffering at the expense of Covid-19 patients. “Now only two hospitals will have to deal with all the patients coming from out-districts and it will result in restricted resources at these two hospitals and their staff will also be overburdened,” he said.
