Another unilateral move
DPK hit for adopting confirmation report
A National Assembly committee has passed a confirmation report on Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister-nominee Byeon Chang-heum. The ruling Democratic Party of Korea s (DPK) 17 lawmakers on the 26-member committee voted for the report Monday amid fierce protests from the opposition People Power Party (PPP).
This is the second time that a confirmation report has been passed in the absence of a bipartisan consensus since the confirmation hearing of Unification Minister-nominee Lee In-young in July. The DPK maintains that there is no problem with Byeon s qualifications.
DPK Rep. Kang Jun-hyun said, Byeon has already given a sincere apology for his past remarks. There could be many problems with the appointment of key officials in the future should they fail to get Assembly approval because of allegations based on speculation.
[Kim Myong-sik] 21st National Assembly, Behemoth of the 21st century |
South Korea’s 21st term of the National Assembly is the Behemoth of the 21st century it can do anything, bad things mostly. The Book of Job in the Old Testament describes it:
“When the river rages, he is not alarmed; he is secure, though the Jordan should surge against his mouth .
“Can anyone capture him by the eyes, or trap him and pierce his nose?” (40:23-24)
The new representative body elected in the general election on April 15 has acted in the fashion of a biblical monster, serving the interests of a political group obsessed with consolidating and extending its grip on power, ignoring principles and practices of democracy established through the bumpy seven-decade history of this republic.

A new investigative body tasked with handling high-profile corruption cases may select Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl as its first target after its launch, which could happen by the end of this month.
The ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) used its supermajority in the National Assembly to pass a bill to launch the anti-corruption probe agency, Thursday.
Once considered President Moon Jae-in s man to lead political reform, Yoon has since clashed with the Moon administration on several occasions, the ongoing tussle with Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae being the latest example.
