about their anti-gay propaganda laws. thus i commend you, president obama, for naming her. stand tall. stand proud, billie jean. for cnn, i m samantha schacher. don. that s a mouthful. a lot of entertainment. will atlanta residents keep bieber away? that is a question that may be answered this week. here s the back story on this. okay. as we all know, bieber has got a bad boy reputation. and one ritzy atlanta neighborhood wants no part of the biebs. word that justin bieber might move to atlanta s posh buckhead area sparked a protest movement. tmz reported the singer might be eyeing a mansion that is for sale there. but bieber s camp hasn t confirmed that. protesters say such a move would put their safety at risk. well, the pop star has had several encounters with police in recent months. among other things, he faces charges of drunken driving and resisting arrest after being stopped by police in miami beach last month. wow.
kind of protest, will they be free from persian cushion under the law? translator: acts of protest and propaganda are different things. they are close. but if we were to look at them from a legal perspective, then protesting the law does not amount to propaganda of homosexuality or sexual abuse of children. reporter: russia s gay activists say the climate there is getting ugly. the propaganda laws are policed. it s a huge, converted campaign. it s policed by the kremlin. it s a campaign of hate and violence. basically, it s a law that enshrines second-class citizenship. translator: it has nothing to do with persecuting people for their nontraditional orientation. in this country, everybody is absolutely equal to anybody else. irrespective to one s religious, sex, ethnicity or sexual orientation. reporter: this russian protester was detained for unfurling a rainbow flag during the olympic torch relay.
secretary of state will be in this delegation but a relatively low level clearly a snub and the decision from the president in his statement noted the diversity of the u.s. delegation, the decision to include at least two openly gay delegates that s something there s a clear message to the russians who passed these anti-gay propaganda laws as they re called don t engage in that kind of activity, certainly not during the olympic games in sochi, and maybe don t even engage in them at all. so the u.s. is sending a clear snub. it goes beyond the issue of gay rights in russia, carol. i think it is a clear indication of u.s. irritation with the russians on several other issues, including their decision to grant asylum to edward snowden there, at least for a year, russia s repeated vetoes of anti-syrian resolutions, anti-syrian government resolutions, even though they did cooperate with u.s. and others in dealing with syria s chemical weapons stockpiles. there is a clear strain in
don t ask, don t tell. he s come out for marriage equality. obviously he s against russia s anti-gay propaganda laws. this sends a very strong message. but when we look at the international community rallying around this, do you think that the support is there to make a difference after the olympics? because that s when the attention goes away. right. i think that s a really that s a great question you re raising and i think a really key concern for us is what happens when the olympics are over. there s always a potential of some backlash against people working on the ground for lbgt equality. what we can do is just stay engaged with the russian lbgt community, but i do think it s a concern. shawn, thanks for being here. i appreciate it. thanks for having me. we ll continue to follow as this delegation heads over to russia. thank you, sir. so as we look at what s going on for 2016 and the road to 2016, hillary clinton s road just got a little bumpy. so how seriously should
equality and respect. and i think this delegation will be able to show what it s like to be integrated into society, to be leadership leaders in society. i think that was his thinking behind adding the lgbt people. we also support the decision to not go himself or have the first lady or vice president go. we know other world leaders are taking similar action and we had urged the same. and we know that they are not going, the french president, the german president, so this follows on the heels of that, that they will not be there in russia. we have caitlin cahow telling the usa today, quote, it s obviously a statement that s being made but i think it s an incredibly respectful one. basically the white house is highlighting americans who know what it means to have freedoms and liberties under the constitution. do you expect or would you encourage members of this delegation, like caitlin or billie jean king, to speak out against the propaganda laws in russia while they re on russian s
